Strolling through old Gap
Around Place Jean-Marcellin and Rue de France, old Gap lines up arcades, inner courtyards and old façades in southern Alpine colours. People happily meet near the central fountain before pushing open a wine-cellar door or a local producer’s shop. Walking is the finest way to take in the town together.
Cathedral and mausoleum
The cathedral of Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Arnoux, half Romanesque and half neo-Gothic, raises its polychrome silhouette in the heart of town. Nearby, the Lesdiguières Mausoleum, dedicated to the 17th-century Protestant constable, recalls Gap’s unusual past. These stops along a cultural walk leave room for shared silence, which often says more than long speeches.
Departmental Museum
The departmental museum offers a journey through natural history and decorative arts, inside a bright modern building. A late-morning date, followed by lunch close by, is a gentle, comfortable choice. On Lyad, people from Gap swap tips on exhibitions and urban walks; it is up to you to find someone to extend the visit with.
